Matthew 4:4, “Christian” Left version

The “Christian” Left pretends to like the Bible, but even then they act like the “red letters” (the direct quotes of Jesus) are all that really count.  And to make it worse, they don’t even believe the “red letters!”

Here’s a perfect example:

Matthew 4:4 But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”

For starters, Jesus is talking to Satan in this passage and the “Christian” Left routinely denies that Satan is real (even though he’s mentioned on an average of roughly once per chapter in the New Testament).  So they start by sawing off the branch they are sitting on and dismissing these “red letters” as fiction.

But it gets worse.  Jesus clearly says that we shall live by every word that comes from the mouth of God.  But the “Christian” Left picks and chooses what verses they like and they routinely mock much of the word of God.  Their views of the Bible are barely distinguishable from those of atheists. They have no standard to determine what “every word” would be except what they think they like.  They dismiss the Gospel of John, for example (unless they are using a verse out of context to support their politics-disguised-as-religion views).

So here’s the “Christian” Left translation:

Matthew 4:4 But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God, except that most of what is in the Bible isn’t the word of God — including this passage, because we “know” that Satan doesn’t exist, so we don’t really know what the word of God is.  No, wait, we do know: It is the parts that we think we like!  Isn’t that convenient? ”

    You are right about this. Though I have to admit that there are times when I want to do the same thing. God give me the grace to believe all that He has written and not just the parts that I like.

  2. Funny, I remember he saying something about looking to the log in your own eye vs. the speck in your neighbors’ eye. Interesting… as long as we can make sin about “them out there” we don’t have to deal with our own.

    1. I don’t follow your comment. Are you saying we shouldn’t call out false teachers? Or are you saying that I have a “log” of false teaching of my own to deal with, but that you don’t so that you can criticize me?

    2. So, associatedluke, are you saying that the “Christian” Left are not really Christian? Paul very clearly stated we really should be judging those inside the church:

      For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? (1 Corinthians 5:12)

      We do this to UPLIFT each other, we teach, reproof, correct, and train each other in righteousness as we are called to do

      Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17)

      Throughout the bible we are called to teach, train, support, correct, reprove, judge and even discipline each other in love. Anyone that feels a need to hide behind the battlecry of the weak “Don’t judge me!” and insists on being called a Christian seriously needs teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness

      1. I am saying they are Christian. You don’t have the right to say they aren’t. They can sharpen you right back. As Paul talks about judging he also talks a lot about unity.

        “Walk worthily of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and humility, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love; being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:1-3). Saying “you’re not Christian” is not longsuffering nor does it bear with anyone, it writes them off.

        We all have our own false teachings to deal with. I would rather sit and tell of our struggles than cast stones at “those people over there!” I’ve found a lot more traction in my ministries with that approach. You win people over to Christ through listening and reflecting, not this bile being spewed.

        You are so judgmental! What gives you the right to say who is and isn’t a Christian? 🙂

        “Christians” who deny the deity and exclusivity of Jesus — and more!! — shouldn’t be taken any more seriously than you’d take an atheist who believes in God or a Muslim who loves Jews and pork but hates the Koran and Mohammad.

  3. Putting quotes around “Christian” shows what you really think. I know many Mulsims who love Jews. You love painting with a board brush don’t you. You also came onto my site and wrote, “You’re no Christian.” Now you’re questioning ” What gives you the right to say who is and isn’t a Christian?” Ironic. And rich.

    A fake Christ through listening and reflecting and asking questions? Ok. Let’s test this with the Gospels. In the 4 canonical Gospels Jesus asks many more questions than he answers. To be precise, Jesus asks 307 questions. He is asked 183 of which he only answers 3. Asking questions was central to Jesus’ life and teachings. In fact, for every question he answers directly he asks—literally—a hundred. If we are called to be like Christ (John 14:12) and put on the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16), then should we ask more questions?

Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

      Your whole “questions” bit was a straw-man. I love apologetics. I’ve spent countless hours working on solid, biblical answers to tough questions and I encourage and applaud them. But the “Christian” Left questions aren’t really questions.
