Various lessons from the Chinese virus crisis

The past few weeks have been like a bad movie made by 2nd graders, but you are chained to the chair and can’t stop watching.

As I like to say on good days and bad, it is a great day to be a Christian.  But it is especially great during a personal or societal crisis.  We know that our Redeemer lives.  Our #1 problem in life – being rebellious sinners against an omnipotent and perfectly holy God — was solved by our Savior.  If we focus on him we can continue to live with joy.

Empty shelves and hoarding were newsworthy because they were such an anomaly in our great capitalistic country. But that’s daily life with socialism and communism.

Will people learn to save more for emergencies or will the government “giving” them money reinforce the fiction that all your big problems will be solved by them?

Leftists think Trump is Hitler 2.0 and they criticize him 24×7 in the most vicious terms while the real despots are in Socialist / Communist countries: Chinese tycoon vanishes after calling Xi a ‘clown,’ slamming government’s handling of COVID-19.  Short of making death threats, no one has been arrested in the U.S. for hating on Trump.

Predictably, the Left has exploited the virus to harm Trump, but all you need to know is that Biden criticized Trump for banning travel from China.  That foolish move alone shows that he is incompetent and malicious.  The same goes for anyone else on the Left: If they ever accused Trump of overreacting with the China travel ban or anything else, they need to shut up.

We must be less reliant on other countries for our basic needs. Why would you source over 90% of key medicines from a sworn enemy?

We must protect our borders, and anyone who still opposes that Is doing it from malice. Before it might have been from ignorance, but no longer.

I don’t mind the government making suggestions, but I don’t like the fact that they can mandate against our right to free assembly. That’s a bad habit to get into.  I appreciate churches erring on the side of safety, but I don’t want the government telling me I can’t assemble however I like.  Just say no to more government power in this pandemic:

Let’s not give the government more power to dictate our lives, even during a pandemic. Common sense isn’t a government-forced lockdown of life. It is reducing regulations so companies can get a vaccine out quicker to the general populace and not telling private labs to stop testing if they have found a way to detect the virus.

We don’t need to embrace socialism or a top-heavy approach to fighting a pandemic, temporary or not. ‘Temporary’ tends to become long-term in the hands of the government.

And does anyone think these government leaders shared in the suffering for any shortages?

Oh, then there’s this: Illinois Mayor Grants Herself Power to Ban Guns During Coronavirus Pandemic.  Leftists would never abuse that, would they?

Hopefully people find some new and long-lasting habits.  Maybe they’ll realize that they don’t need to spend so much time tracking the exploits of athletes and celebrities and watching various sportsball events.  Hopefully they’ll use the time to exercise themselves.  Or that time with their kids can be fun and helpful to them.

I had to go on Facebook to watch our church’s live streaming (I borrow my wife’s account) and noticed many people sharing links to their church’s streaming services.  Hopefully some people who don’t otherwise attend church will check them out.  My Mom is a very committed Bible believer but is in a denomination that has drifted, so I was encouraged when she really enjoyed a link to our church’s site (45 minutes of outstanding expository preaching!).  Downside: More people probably watched Joel Osteen and the like [shudders].

I really hope people don’t cut back on their giving just because they aren’t attending in person.  This is not the time to shortchange God!

Hopefully more people will consider getting out of government schools!  Parents Worried They’ll Have To Raise Their Own Children As Government Schools Shut Down | The Babylon Bee

And maybe it will make more people reconsider traditional colleges.  Who needs wildly expensive campus experiences, where there is more debauchery than learning?  Just go online for a fraction of the cost.  The “greens” should be wild about online textbooks instead of paper, and they should be less expensive.  They can use recorded videos for most things and save lots of $$.

The company I work for had all non assembly/shipping/sales people work from home for now.  I’ve been working from home for years, so this wasn’t much of a change for me.  Half my team travels a lot and half is at our corporate offices, so the latter are getting used to working from home for a stretch.  Saving the time and stress of commuting is great!  I challenged them all with a simple mission: Be safe, innovative and productive.  So far, so good.

If the Leftist “green” movement was not hypocritical and haters of humanity, wouldn’t they be pushing aggressively for more work-at-home and home schooling options?  Look how much less traffic there is!  Home schoolers don’t sit outside schools with their engines idling mornings and afternoons dropping off and waiting for kids.  The Left should be thrilled with this, but they aren’t.   Because hypocrisy.

Yes, the Leftist / Deep State really are cheering this.

Responding to the phony “wage gap” argument

First, here are the facts about that mythical wage gap that Leftists maliciously and/or ignorantly use to appeal to low-information voters:

1. There is no real wage gap when you factor in experience and skills.
2. There are already laws in place, so if there was a real gap you would have recourse.
3. A massive government bureaucracy to fine-tune the mythical gap would be incredibly costly, inefficient and prone to corruption.
4. Ever notice how feminists ignore the male “domination” of trash collectors, lawn care workers, construction workers, miners and other dangerous and/or more demanding jobs?
5. If there really was a gap then the market would correct for it. Oh, you don’t want to pay qualified women or minorities market wages? Great, I’ll hire them all and kick your butt in the marketplace! As always, you are welcome to start your own business and “fix” the problem. Oh, but that’s hard work . . . never mind.

So don’t be a sucker. There is no wage gap.

Better yet, whenever people bring up the phony wage gap, just play dumb and say, “You’re right, the safety gap is a very serious issue. So many men are injured and killed because they have more dangerous jobs than women. We need to do something about it!”

Or pick one of these topics to make the same point, or rattle off a bunch of them, to show that the real victims are usually men.  Play out the conversation as they squirm.  Ask why the media doesn’t report on that, why people don’t protest to help these men, where are the social media memes, etc.

Religious pluralism is intellectually bankrupt

One of my old favorites . . .

pluralism.jpg

There are two main kinds of religious pluralism.  One is good and one is intellectually bankrupt.

Good pluralism: Numerous distinct ethnic, religious, or cultural groups are present and tolerated within a society.

Bad pluralism: All religions are true and equally valid paths to God.

Pluralism can be a good thing if it means we should tolerate the beliefs of others.  Jesus, who was God in flesh, didn’t force anyone to convert.  So why should we think that we can?

Christianity should flourish in a society with good pluralism, as the Gospel can be shared freely and there isn’t pressure to fake one’s beliefs.  Sadly, we often get complacent in such atmospheres and Christianity spreads just as well or better in times of persecution.  It tends to weed out false believers and teachers more effectively.

Of course, there are some truths in each religion, but there are irreconcilable differences in their essential truth claims regarding the nature of God, the path to salvation, their view of Jesus, etc.

Here are some examples:

One of the following is possible when we die, but under no circumstance could more than one be possible:

  1. Reincarnation (Hinduism, New Age)
  2. Complete nothingness (Atheism)
  3. One death then judgment by God (Christianity, Islam, others)

Jesus was either the Messiah (Christianity) or He was not the Messiah (Judaism and others), but He cannot be both the Messiah and not the Messiah.

God either doesn’t exist (Atheism), He exists and is personal (Christianity) or He exists and is impersonal (Hinduism).

Jesus either died on the cross (Christianity) or He didn’t (Islam).  The Koran repeatedly claims that Jesus did not die on the cross (Sura 4:157-158). What evidence does Islam offer? One guy with a vision over 500 years after the fact. That is not what we base history upon, especially when scholars of the first century — whether Christians or not — agree that a real person named Jesus died on a Roman cross.

God either revealed himself to us (many religions) or he didn’t (Atheism, Agnosticism).

Jesus is the eternally existent God (Christianity) or He isn’t (everything else, including the Mormon and Jehovah’s Witness). In fact, in Islam it is an unforgivable sin to claim that Jesus is God, so there is no way to reconcile Christianity and Islam.

Some people hold the view that God will be whatever you conceive him to be in this life.  That is one of the most bizarre religious views I have heard.  I’m not sure how they came to the conclusion that every human gets a designer god and that at death it would be just as one wished.

Consider the view of Mahatma Gandhi and Hinduism in general:

After long study and experience, I have come to the conclusion that [1] all religions are true; [2] all religions have some error in them; [3] all religions are almost as dear to me as my own Hinduism, in as much as all human beings should be as dear to one as one’s own close relatives. My own veneration for other faiths is the same as that for my own faith; therefore no thought of conversion is possible. (Mahatma Gandhi, All Men Are Brothers: Life and Thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi as told in his own words, Paris, UNESCO 1958, p 60.)

Yet the exclusive claims of Christianity prove Gandhi’s worldview (that of Hinduism) to be false.  Among other things, the Bible claims at least one hundred times that Jesus is the only way to salvation.  It also commands us not to worship idols and that we die once and then face judgment (it does not hold to reincarnation).  Those are key elements of the Hindu faith.  So if Hinduism is true then Christianity cannot be true.  But if Hinduism is correct in stating that all religions are true, then Christianity must be true.  But Christianity claims to be the one true path, so if it is true then Hinduism is not.

Also, Hinduism claims that Christianity is true, so if Christianity is false then so is Hinduism.  Either way, the logic of Gandhi and Hinduism collapses on itself.

When I share the Gospel with people I do so as respectfully as possible.  But I always try to work in examples like the above to highlight that under no circumstances can we both be right about the nature of God and salvation.

I used to hold the position of religious pluralism.  We studied world religions about 15 years ago in an Adult Sunday School class and, sadly, didn’t dig very deep (I was attending church but not really a believer . . . at best I was “saved and confused”).  Most of us walked away thinking the religions were “all pretty much the same” and with no incentive to go out and make a case for Christianity.

So why did I – and so many people today, including Christians – embrace bad pluralism? I think it is typically out of a lack of clear thinking on the topic.  When you examine the essentials of these faiths it is not that hard to show how they are irreconcilable.

Political correctness and fear contribute as well.  It is easy to deny the exclusivity of Jesus (or the truth claims of whatever faith one follows) if one wants to avoid controversy.  But as unpopular as it is to make truth claims, it is really a rather logical thing to do.  The one claiming all religions are true needs to back up that claim with their evidence and logic.  Just rattle off a list of religions, sects and cults and ask why they are all true.  Just be careful saying things like, “Hinduism has a lot of sects.”  If you say it too quickly people will have surprised looks on their faces.

Sheer laziness is another factor.  Knowing enough about one’s faith to defend it in the marketplace of ideas is hard work.  Religious pluralism is a great excuse not to evangelize.

I expect many non-Christians to say that all paths lead to God, but it really bothers me when Christians do so.  They should meditate on this passage, among others:

Galatians 1:8-9 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

If Trump is so bad, why does the Left deliberately lie about him?

One of the ways you know that Leftists – including their wholly-owned media and the “Christian” Left wolves — are malicious liars is how they reflexively misquote Donald Trump to slander him.  They know they are speaking lies but they do it anyway no matter how many times conservatives out them.  Why?  Because their followers will never know they are lies.

Example 1: Michael Bloomberg recently whipped out the top lie, though it is standard fare on the Left, especially from people like the late Rachel Held Evans (she used all of these regularly and refused to be corrected):

Americans felt so much pain when Donald Trump said they were very fine people among the Nazis and the Klan.

Fact check: FALSE.  Trump actually said this:

“I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and white nationalists because they should be condemned totally.”

Trump wasn’t the least  bit vague, but the Left continues the lies.  That has been refuted so many times that it is unconscionable for them to repeat it.  More here.

Example 2: “Trump admits to sexual assault!!”  Fact check: FALSE  Yes, Trump made a crude locker-room reference that was caught on video and saved by the media until just before the elections (because “news” or something).  But the Left always leaves out the key words: “And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything . . . Grab ’em by the . . .”

Got that?  If they let you do something then it isn’t sexual assault.  It is consensual.  His comment – which was almost certainly an exaggeration (does anyone really think he just walks up and starts kissing women he just met, as he also said in the clip?) — says as much about star-struck women as it does his behaviors at the time.

Example 3: “He made fun of a disabled reporter!!” Fact check: FALSE See this — The True Story: Donald Trump Did Not Mock a Reporter’s Disability

There are more, of course, but you get the idea.  The facts are there but the Left deliberately ignores them.

And when they aren’t misquoting him, they just lie about him.  How many times have you heard him called a Fascist?   Uh, yeah, of course Trump is a fascist! All fascists cut taxes, eliminate government regulations, fight for gun rights, etc.

Anyone claiming Trump is a fascist might as well shout that they are ignorant of politics and history.

P.S. Trump is a fascist, so give him your guns.

Democrats hate blacks.

And that includes their media accomplices, of course.  There are no other explanations for the following.

  1. They know that promoting out-of-wedlock births is terrible for families and dooms them to generational poverty, but they need that permanent black underclass to provide faithful Democratic votes.  Democrats have had monopoly control over most inner city politics, schools and media for over half a century, and look what it has done for blacks.  Remember the Democrat Death Spiral: “a vicious cycle by which miserable economic conditions lead to government dependency and class envy, leading to Democrat electoral victories, leading to higher taxes and crippling regulations, leading to still more miserable economic conditions.”  Even if their intentions were good, Leftists literally fail at basic economics.
  2. That said, they still hate black people so much that they push abortion on them, resulting in black children being killed at a rate three times that of whites.  Planned Parenthood kills more blacks in a day than the KKK has in their history, and it isn’t an accident.  So with my abortion position there would be many more blacks alive today.  Who are the real racists?
  3. They oppose charter schools, thereby condemning many black children to failing, dangerous, out of control schools.  They can’t stand any competition with their unions — even though countless teachers in Leftist areas who can afford it send their children to private schools.
  4. Because of number 2 the Democrats need more votes, so they import illegals by the truckload and want open borders.  That takes the jobs of low-income blacks and suppresses the wages of remaining jobs.
  5. They want to disarm blacks so they can’t defend themselves, all the while living in their safe, gated communities with home security systems and armed guards.
  6. They knowingly spread lies such as “hands up, don’t shoot” that promote riots and destroy black communities, all because it advances the Leftists’ agenda.  They have no intention of truly helping people in towns like Ferguson, especially after riots destroy the towns and even fewer businesses want to locate there.
  7. They talk down to blacks.  Studies show that conservative whites talk to blacks in a more normal fashion while Leftists condescend and dumb things down.  And they assume that blacks are too stupid to get an ID to be able to vote (although that is more about the Left wanting to steal elections with voter fraud).
  8. And to make all that worse, the Left — including the “Christian” Left — have the nerve to say that Republicans are the racists.  They create bitterness and divisiveness 24×7 just so they can increase their power.  No matter how well some blacks have done the Left gaslights them into thinking they are oppressed and must be miserable.  Whereas blacks used to want more policing in their communities, the Left has now convinced them to hate the police and to protect the drug dealers and thugs that destroy their neighborhoods and harm their children.
  9. They seek to destroy successful conservative blacks such as Clarence Thomas and Condoleezza Rice, referring to them as “Uncle Toms” and such.
  10. They turn a hypocritical blind eye to wickedly misogynistic, violent and hateful rap music even though they know it harms the black culture, yet they cry about “micro-aggressions” allegedly made by whites.

J. Edgar Hoover

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  It covered so many aspects of U.S. history and filled in a lot of blanks for me about key characters.  Here are some random observations.

While the author tilts to the Left politically and clearly doesn’t like Hoover (and not without many good reasons), his thorough analysis can’t help but show the many foibles and evils of Democrats as well as Hoover and Republicans.  It was FDR that expanded Hoover’s powers greatly, and FDR, Kennedy and Johnson loved how Hoover provided them with gossip and blackmail material.  He also noted the vote-stealing of Kennedy and Johnson and the manufactured images of the Kennedy family.

Hoover provided irrefutable evidence of what a fraud the “Reverend” side of MLK was, but the media and politicians chose to ignore it.

He pretended for years that significant organized crime didn’t exist, perhaps because they had something on him and/or because the difficulty of the cases would impact his success rate for solving crimes.   But when it became public just how real it was and when Attorney General Robert Kennedy pushed him on it in the 1960’s , he went after it with a vengeance and made great progress.

All over the United States crime families discussed this sudden, astonishing turn of events—they were especially stunned to find that the FBI even knew the family infrastructure—and agreed there should be no recurrence. But mob leaders in Youngstown, Ohio, didn’t get the message. The agents overheard them discussing which of their three available hit men to use to kill an FBI agent they particularly disliked. Some twenty of the area’s biggest and baddestlooking agents barged into the Mafia chieftain’s penthouse apartment, “accidentally” knocked over expensive vases, dropped cigarettes and still-lit matches on the Oriental carpets, urinated on a favorite potted palm. “You may have three hit men,” they told him, “but Mr. Hoover has thousands.”54

After that, no one again referred to FBI agents on overhears as Boy Scouts.

But the Mafiosi didn’t blame FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who had left them alone for so many years. They were sure that he was only a reluctant warrior, acting on the orders of Attorney General Robert Kennedy.

He was also a racist who stood to the side on various KKK issues, but again, when finally pressed into action, he made great strides against the KKK.  Whether legal or not, actions like sending postcards to KKK members (that others were sure to read) noting how they were known members and such helped shame people into leaving the group.  The FBI would even send fake letters to spouses telling them that their KKK-member husbands were having affairs.  The idea was to distract them at home to keep them from terrorizing others.

Here’s an example of how they worked to pit the Communists and Mafia against each other:

In November the director [Hoover] informed selected SACs [Special Agends in Charge] about the Bureau’s inspiration for a Klanzi party COINTELPRO [COunter INtelligence PROgrams]: “We created the impression that the Klan and the American Nazi Party might form the Klanzi Party…for the purpose of ridicule and to provoke certain Klan leaders to an attack on the ANP.” A month before, someone suggested a rather similar plan to disrupt the Communist party and La Cosa Nostra by “having them expend their energies attacking each other.” A supposedly Communist leaflet attacking the working conditions at a mob-owned business was to be the first fruit of Operation Hoodwink.

If you ask most Lefties who the Vietnam war hawks were they would probably blame Republicans, but it was Kennedy and Johnson who drove it.

The un-checked power of someone who had the power to dig up dirt on everyone except Jesus made for a dangerous combination.  He could blackmail just about anyone, including Presidents.

It was interesting how many times homosexual issues came up in the book.  The government would screen for that, because it opened people to potential blackmail.  But what was interesting is that most of the evidence was from police records where individuals had been caught in parks, restrooms, etc.  What is it with that deviancy that leads people to such reckless behavior?

And then there were the “special requests,” as in November 1969 when H. R. Haldeman asked for a list of known or suspected homosexuals in the Washington press corps. Within hours, a detailed report was delivered to the White House, indicating that the FBI director had this particular information close at hand.

The author also noted that “Much has been made of Nixon’s “enemies list.” Every administration had had such a list.”

Sadly, Hoover spent so much time self-promoting and covering for the bureau that they could have accomplished much more.  They missed out on some important opportunities because of his foolish pride.  And he engaged in and allowed a lot of petty embezzlement while he should have set the best example.

The urban legend of Hoover being a cross-dresser wasn’t even noted.  I hate when those things seep into the public consciousness.  But the author frequently alluded to the potentially homosexual relationship of Hoover and his long-time (and also single) 2nd in command, Clyde Tolson, even though he never made a definitive conclusion.

Women Preaching — Excellent biblical analysis on why women shouldn’t be preachers.  This is needed more than ever as the Southern Baptist Convention and others bend to the culture.

The position which permits women preaching to mixed congregations cannot be supported from Scripture. Common descriptive biblical passages do not support the position. First Corinthians 14:34-35 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] and 1 Timothy 2:11-12 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] are the two prescriptive passages in the NT on the issue. Thus, they are the authority on the matter. Exegetically, both passages clearly forbid women from preaching and teaching to men in the local church. Therefore, NT churches must conduct themselves accordingly if they are going to be in obedience to Christ, the blessed Lord of the church.
