What working at Wal-Mart taught a young conservative woman about the poor

Here are just two short anecdotes:

a) People ignoring me on their iPhones while the state paid for their food. (For those of you keeping score at home, an iPhone is at least $200, and requires a data package of at least $25 a month. If a person can spend $25+ a month so they can watch YouTube 24/7, I don’t see why they can’t spend that money on food.)

d) A man who ran a hotdog stand on the pier in Portland, Maine used to come through my line. He would always discuss his hotdog stand and encourage me to “come visit him for lunch some day.” What would he buy? Hotdogs, buns, mustard, ketchup, etc. How would he pay for it? Food stamps. Either that man really likes hotdogs, or the state is paying for his business. Not okay.

How Barack Obama and other big government statists really bankroll their reelections — great video.  This image below the video explains most of it: Even if we cut 100% of non-entitlement spending (i.e., zero military, zero infrastructure, zero politicians, etc.) we don’t take in enough money to pay entitlements.  The deficit grows every year and we’ll be like Greece — only on a much larger and more devastating scale — in less time than you’d think.

One of my first posts four years ago (have I been blogging that long?!) was about my not-quite-patented Veggie Boy smoothies.  I figured I was due for an update.

I’ve been making health smoothies for 30 years and have now achieved the state of the art. Here is the used-to-be secret recipe for my Veggie Boy protein smoothie. (For you Cheers fans, you’ll remember this is the name of the health drink Woody was hypnotized into liking. “You can really taste the kale!”).  Yeah, there are more fruits than vegetables but “Fruity boy” just doesn’t have the same ring.

It is really, really healthy. Vitamins, protein, fiber, low fat, all natural, etc. Drink it for breakfast and you can eat Snickers the rest of the day.  I have a couple glasses for breakfast and some more for lunch or after I work out.  I never eat cooked vegetables and am fairly unlikely to eat them raw, so consuming them in smoothie form is a gigantic plus.

You need a pretty powerful blender to chop up the carrots and frozen stuff. We splurged and got a Vita Mix a few months back and I couldn’t be happier.  It gets used twice a day on average.  (It replaced a 2 HP Waring blender.  It was nice and powerful, but didn’t blend quite as well on frozen things.  Oh, and it turns out that those blue sparks coming out of the bottom meant that it was “arcing,” which apparently is a bad electrical thingy.)

It used to be more of a production to make the smoothies it so I’d skip it when I was busy, but with the extra power I can use more frozen things.  For example, it saves a lot of time to have apples cut up and frozen so I can just drop them in instead of cutting them up each morning.  I get up at 5:15 and like to be out the door by 5:45 so I don’t have a lot of time to prepare things.

And it saves you money as well.  If fruit, such as bananas, starts to go bad you can freeze it for smoothies instead of throwing it away.  I hate to waste things.

The rest of the family uses it often to make more normal (read: tastier) but still quite nutritious drinks.

Here’s the current recipe:

  • Milk (preferably whole milk, though not much chance of that unless I’m doing the shopping).  Sometimes organic, sometimes not.
  • A whole carrot or some baby carrots
  • Baby spinach
  • Mixed greens
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Some frozen mixed fruit – strawberries / blueberries / raspberries / blackberries – Wal-Mart has a good deal on these and it is easier than buying them fresh.
  • Any other fruit we’ve got. I’m not picky.
  • Some walnuts, when I remember to put them in.
  • Natural whey protein powder (The Vitamin Shoppe has good deals. GNC is more expensive.)

Don’t tell CPS, but when Daughter #1 was young I told her one Halloween that she could eat all the candy she wanted if she had a small glass of Veggie Boy first. I thought she actually liked it (it is rather sweet tasting), but I learned years later that she choked it down. I would have let her eat as much candy as she wanted anyway. Fortunately, she is the forgiving type.  Fortunately she has turned out fabulously despite many parenting moments like that.

P.S. I never understood the juicer concept. Seems like you are throwing out all the good stuff.

Free advice for Communists, Socialists and general anti-business types

I came across a pro-Communism blog when the owner commented here.  He basically encourages people to do all manner of evil to fight: evil.  How consistent.

My advice to people like him: Hey, if you and your comrades are so smart, why not form your own corporations and run them by your definition of good ethics.  Then you’ll have such a swell place to work that you can hire away the best and brightest from your evil competitors, right?  You can put them out of business and do it legally!  You don’t even have to resort to violence.  (Disappointed?)

If you think that the evil insurance companies charge too much, then pool your resources and start your own insurance company.  Beat them at their own game!  You’ll either drive them out of business or force them to reduce prices and increase benefits to compete with you.  Not only are you more righteous than your competition but you are smarter as well, right?  You can’t lose!

You know you have the skills to know your markets, follow all the tax, financial reporting, environmental, labor and other laws, keep your employees safe, make payroll, create and run efficient business processes, and so much more.  And you can do all those things better than your enemies.  Beating them will be so easy.

Or do you know how to do any of that?  Would that be too much work?  Isn’t it easier to plot how to take down “the man” and then release some endorphins?

And what is your plan once you take down the evil corporations and trash everyone’s retirement accounts?  Who will be left to pay taxes to support all your dreams?

I know a little bit about business and how jobs are formed, and it is tragic that Obama’s cabinet has, by far, the least business experience of any administration. I know what sends jobs overseas. They have no idea what creates real, lasting jobs — the ones that ultimately fund the government.

As I’ve said before, capitalism has its rough edges but it beats out every other “-ism” in a serious way.  Its critics never seem to realize that their plans bring the “killing the goose that laid the golden eggs” story to life.

We’re going to celebrate Valentine’s Day at Arby’s.  We went to our favorite local place the other day, but Arby’s is nostalgic for us.  We got married right out of college and got dressed up and went out on a Friday night for our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple.  We never thought about making reservations.  The lines were unbelievably long so we ended up at the Arby’s drive-through.  Then we went back to the apartment and watched Miami Vice.  Good times!

P.S. I don’t like to brag, but I’m an Arby’s alumnus.  I worked at one the summer after my freshman year in college. Oddly, that doesn’t translate into discounts with them.

Undercover employee at Wal-mart discovers they ain’t so bad — Some people love to demonize Wal-Mart for allegedly underpaying their employees and not providing enough benefits, among other things. I’m not saying Wal-Mart is perfect or beyond criticism by any means. I just find that the bashers display the typical covetous attitude of those who think God is doing a lousy job of distributing wealth and that He needs their help to fix the problem.  And they usually appear to have a disdain for those who shop at Wal-Mart. 

Wal-Mart does a lot of things really well.  I especially like their pro-customer attitude.  They realize that the average customer spends roughly $200,000 there over the course of a lifetime so offending one of them is incredibly costly.  Can you imagine how much nicer things would be if every business was so customer focused?

Here’s what I always recommend to Wal-Mart bashers (you’d be surprised how quickly they change the subject one you suggest this): Start up a business near a Wal-Mart and pay slightly higher wages and benefits. It will be a triple win: Your business will be successful because you hired some of the best and brightest Wal-Mart employees, their standard of living will increase and you’ll be sticking it to your enemy. It is called capitalism. It has some hard edges at times, but it has done more to reduce poverty and increase standards of living than any other “-ism” every invented.

I was glad to see the Pope speak out against the Holocaust denying Bishop.  But I’m always amused by those like the Reverend Pathological Unrepentent Liar Chuck Currie who are so shrill about Holocaust deniers but are themselves Gospel deniers.  In direct contrast to the New Testament, false teachers like Currie deliberately hold back the eternal life-saving message of the Gospel from Jewish people.  That’s an eternal Holocaust, but “reverends” like Chuck are either too ignorant, cowardly or evil to speak the truth.

To paraphrase Currie, the real Gospel simply cannot be denied and those that do should have no place in positions of authority in any church.
