Should Food Stamp Purchases Be Limited to Healthy Food?

Fooducate (a great app to use in the grocery store to see
how healthy your food really is) asked the title question on their
blog
. My response: The choices should be limited to
healthy foods. They listed these potential objections, to
which I would ask people to simply consider a parallel of neighbors
helping each other.

  • Limiting the food choices
    is paternalistic nanny state oversight.
Limiting choices on drink
sizes is ridiculous. That is true nanny-statism. But
this is vastly different: You have a choice to accept or reject the
free food offered by fellow citizens.
Would you accuse your neighbor of such things if they only
offered you free healthy food?
  • Eliminating food
choice would create a stigma and shame SNAP
    beneficiaries.
What stigma? You are getting free food.
You should be grateful.
  • The diets of SNAP
participants are generally comparable to the diets of Americans of
similar economic means, so why single poor people out?
Because taxpayers are paying for their food.
  • The cost of reprogramming computers and retraining
grocery store staff for the hundreds of thousands of food items in
    stores is prohibitive.
It would be worth it to help those people.
And it would save on the medical
costs.
  • Where will the line be drawn between healthy /
non-healthy foods? Is a cereal with 12 grams of sugar nutritious? 8
grams? 4 grams? What if it has added fiber?
The details could be worked
out. I would make things really simple and focus on things like
oatmeal, milk, bread, cheese, fruits, etc. And I wouldn’t let
them have cards that they could sell for cash and use it for drugs,
cigarettes, bad food, etc. Part of our problem is that by
trying to save money with technology (normally a good thing!) we’ve
made it too easy to abuse the program. That kills the cost
savings.

Roundup

Great message about why we shouldn’t modify worship services to meet the alleged desires of the unsaved.

God was exposing a lie that had held us captive for years.  He was proving that his Word is fully sufficient, and that true converts thirst for it like a desert thirsts for rain.  Many who had grown up in the faith had hearts that were calloused toward the Truth.  Years of comfortable church had led them to hear the Word but excuse themselves from practicing it, steadily becoming self-deceived.  They projected this hard-heartedness onto newcomers, like the kids in the old Life Cereal commercials:  “Try teaching that to Mikey the Seeker – he HATES everything… Heyyyy…  Mikey LIKES it!”  Unfortunately, some never noticed or accepted that new believers were craving pure spiritual milk and even graduating to meat ahead of them.

The Sunday School class at the church we joined last year spent 3 years going verse by verse through 1 Peter.  A recipe for boredom and a shrinking class, right?  Hardly.  It grew like crazy, attracting high school kids (including my daughters) up to retired people.  Real believers want real Bible teaching.  You can tell how much confidence people have in the word of God and its power by how they treat it in sermons and lessons.

The one-size-fits-all response to Obama and his supporters when they complain about the Republican House preventing them from doing something: “You had two years of a Congress with sizable Democratic majorities, plus the momentum from your election win.  If raising taxes [or whatever else they are complaining about] was so important, why didn’t you do it then?”

—–

Atheist Jerry Coyne was so quick to dismiss the fact that Darwinian philosophy was at the root of the Columbine shootings that he said this in light of the latest events in Colorado.

Of course there was no evidence at all that Darwinism or evolution had motivated the shooters. They were disaffected and troubled boys who, thanks to America’s lax gun laws, were able to acquire an arsenal of firearms.

But as the facts show, Coyne was completely wrong.  But he is totally accurate on all of his science and never lets his ideology get in the way, right?

It was amusing to read the anti-gun rhetoric of his followers.  The survival-of-the-fittest types can’t go three sentences without contradicting themselves.

—–

Does it bother any of Obama’s supporters that he has an enemies list and that at least one person on it is now under audit from the IRS and the Labor Department?

—–

Did the mainstream media tell you about the woman killed during an abortion at Planned Parenthood, along with her child?  “Safe and legal” only applies to the leaders of PP and their protection from accountability for countless acts of hiding statutory rape.

—–

I’ve yet to find one of the anti-gun politicians or false teachers who isn’t pro-legalized abortion.  And I’m pretty sure they are all pro-taxpayer-funded abortion, meaning that they think our country would be better if only more unwanted human beings were destroyed in the womb.

My question for them: Would they switch to opposing abortion if the “doctors” used guns instead of knives?

—–

The #1 thing to remember in the gun control debate: Criminals don’t obey gun control laws.

Methodists in Northeast Approve Pro-Gay Resolution — The Methodist Church in the U.S. is doomed. The non-Christians outnumber the Christians in this conference. Worse yet, even in a conservative area like the Texas Conference the non-Christians are able to keep Bible-believing and Book of Disciple-following pastors from becoming Bishop — and solely because they hold a biblical view of homosexuality.

While I’d love to blame the non-Christians in the denomination for this, it is really the fault of the squishy Bible-believing leaders and members who didn’t have the faith and courage to exercise church discipline and remove false teachers. Appeasement is deadly, not loving.  Sadly, some Bible-believers have learned that the hard way.  Appeasing doesn’t increase your odds of getting promoted, it just makes it 100% likely that you’ve sacrificed your principles and stopped preaching the whole counsel of God.

Leonard Pitts is a racist.  He thinks blacks and Hispanics are too helpless to obtain voter ID, even though they must provide identification for countless other daily activities.  And my guess is that he is pro-legalized abortion, which currently kills blacks at a rate 3x that of whites and Hispanics at a rate 2x that of whites. And those rates will increase as the Liberal dream of taxpayer-funded abortions increases.  Seems kinda racist to me.

Oh noes! Sojourners is mobilizing!

I haven’t written about Jim “the Gospel is all about wealth redistribution” Wallis and his Sojourners group for a while.  See Fun With Numbers for a good analysis of their latest ramblings and rationalizations for advancing failed Leftist policies while pretending to be centrists.

Behind the numbers are vulnerable people and sacred lives.

. . .

We will let Congress know we must not balance our national budget on the backs of “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40).

They fought strenuously for the health care bill when it included taxpayer-funded abortions and they opposed the Stupak Amendment which would have removed abortion funding.  In other words, they are pro-abortion, which makes their claims about “vulnerable people” and the “least of these” ring hollow.

Also remember that Wallis originally denied taking money from George Soros, then finally admitted it, then recently took another $150,000 from a Leftist atheist who is on record for opposing America.  But Wallis is a real centrist, right?

Come and See!

Inspired by the biblical story of Philip and Nathanael (John 1:43-46), Sojourners is calling on faith communities and faith-based organizations to invite their Congressional representatives to “come and see” the organizations and people in your communities that will be placed at risk by severe budget cuts.

And leave it to them to rip a Bible passage out of context to justify their Leftist ends. (What does the story of Nathaniel and Phillip have to do with this? Couldn’t anyone use that “come and see” bit for any reason?)

As usual, they are being “generous” with other people’s money and releasing endorphins as they congratulate themselves.

Whoa! Even the Associated Press recognizes Obama’s hypocrisy on the jobs bill

His public speeches are pure politics.  If you can’t see that, your media of choice has left you hopelessly misinformed.  He’s only trying to save one job, and that is his.

Via SPIN METER: Obama disconnects rhetoric, reality.

In President Barack Obama’s sales pitch for his jobs bill, there are two versions of reality: The one in his speeches and the one actually unfolding in Washington.

When Obama accuses Republicans of standing in the way of his nearly $450 billion plan, he ignores the fact that his own party has struggled to unite behind the proposal.

When the president says Republicans haven’t explained what they oppose in the plan, he skips over the fact that Republicans who control the House actually have done that in detail.

And when he calls on Congress to “pass this bill now,” he slides past the point that Democrats control the Senate and were never prepared to move immediately, given other priorities. Senators are expected to vote Tuesday on opening debate on the bill, a month after the president unveiled it with a call for its immediate passage.

To be sure, Obama is not the only one engaging in rhetorical excesses. But he is the president, and as such, his constant remarks on the bill draw the most attention and scrutiny.

The disconnect between what Obama says about his jobs bill and what stands as the political reality flow from his broader aim: to rally the public behind his cause and get Congress to act, or, if not, to pin blame on Republicans.

He is waging a campaign, one in which nuance and context and competing responses don’t always fit in if they don’t help make the case.

Abby Johnson on defunding Planned Parenthood

Abby Johnson is a former director of a Planned Parenthood clinic.  She resigned after viewing an ultrasound of an abortion.  In Defund Planned Parenthood she exposes many of the deceptions PP uses to maintain its funding.

Planned Parenthood has been misleading Congress and American taxpayers for many years. I know — I was part of the deception. For eight years I worked at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, and for two of those years I was the clinic’s director.

Here are the ways Planned Parenthood is deceiving the public — and taxpayers — about what it does.

Deception No. 1: Taxpayer funds don’t go to pay for abortions. This defies common sense and basic logic; of course taxpayer money helps to finance abortions at Planned Parenthood clinics.

Planned Parenthood gets one-third of its annual budget from taxpayer funding, and it performed a total of more than 650,000 abortions in just 2008 and 2009 (the last year for which figures are available).

. . .

As clinic director, I saw how money received by Planned Parenthood affiliate clinics all went into one pot at the end of the day — it isn’t divvied up and directed to specific services.

And while Planned Parenthood says abortions make up just 3 percent of its services, I found they used an sleight of hand, unbundling family planning services so each patient shows anywhere from five to 20 “visits” per appointment (12 packs of birth control would show up as 12 individual visits). It does the opposite for abortion visits, bundling them together so each appointment shows as one visit. This skews the numbers. You have an overwhelming number of “visits” for family planning compared to abortion, even though you may have seen the same number of patients.

Deception No. 2: Planned Parenthood wants to reduce the number of abortions in the United States. Nonsense. Its primary focus is abortion and it is big business. In 2009, Planned Parenthood had $1.1 billion, and $63 million left over after expenses (see page 29 of itsannual report).

No wonder Planned Parenthood has established an organization called the Consortium of Abortion Providers, the primary goal of which is to turn every nonabortion Planned Parenthood clinic into an abortion-providing clinic. Planned Parenthood also recently issued a directive mandating that all of its affiliates provide abortions by 2013.

Deception No. 3: Planned Parenthood’s highest priority is women’s health and safety. As referenced several times during the congressional debate about whether or not to defund Planned Parenthood, Live Action has documented numerous occasions in which Planned Parenthood staff have shown willingness to aid and abet self-identified sex traffickers and their professed exploitation of underage girls.

Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey was so embarrassed by office manager Amy Woodruff’s comments recorded by an undercover hidden camera that it had to fire her. She was clearly advising a self-professed sex trafficker on how and where to get abortions for his underage girls. New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow has asked for an investigation.

. . .

Further, Planned Parenthood has adamantly opposed laws in nearly two dozen states that require clinic staff to show a woman a sonogram before the abortion takes place. So much for supporting informed choice.

Read it all.  Taxpayer funds should not support this organization.  If pro-legalized abortionists want to fund PP then they should donate just like pro-lifers donate to fund pregnancy care centers.
