Exercise instead of medicine

As Steve Jobs would tell you (uh, if he could), sometimes you need surgery and medicine, because eating and exercise won’t cure what you’ve got.

But in many, many cases some exercise and better eating will fix your health problems, give you way more energy, save lots of money and put less of a burden on those you love.

You don’t need to do extreme exercise, but here are a couple impressive success stories from people who used P90X.

I see a lot of testimonials posted at 24 Hour Fitness as well.  One was a grandma who was becoming a burden to her family.  After exercising she was able to do so much more on her own and to play with her grandchildren.  Another was a common one where a guy lost a lot of weight and was able to get off all sorts of medicine.

I think the key is to remember who you are competing against: Yourself.  It is the “you” who won’t do any physical activity today versus the “you” who does something — anything!  As the Bible notes, there will always be those better or worse than you, so try not to compare.  Just find something you like, no matter how minimal, and do it.

I like doing a hybrid of P90X weightlifting, some cardio (stair stepper or exercise bike) and core work.  And we go ballroom dancing several times per week.  We’ve met lots of people who lost weight and feel much better since they started dancing.  We think of dance as just a fun hobby and not exercise, but you get the benefits either way.

T.D. Jakes = prosperity gospel false teacher.  MacDonald and Driscoll = hypocrites.  Why didn’t they ask Jakes about his in the meeting where they were buying his anti-trinitarian heresy rationalizations?  Hat tip: Sola Sisters

What working at Wal-Mart taught a young conservative woman about the poor

Here are just two short anecdotes:

a) People ignoring me on their iPhones while the state paid for their food. (For those of you keeping score at home, an iPhone is at least $200, and requires a data package of at least $25 a month. If a person can spend $25+ a month so they can watch YouTube 24/7, I don’t see why they can’t spend that money on food.)

d) A man who ran a hotdog stand on the pier in Portland, Maine used to come through my line. He would always discuss his hotdog stand and encourage me to “come visit him for lunch some day.” What would he buy? Hotdogs, buns, mustard, ketchup, etc. How would he pay for it? Food stamps. Either that man really likes hotdogs, or the state is paying for his business. Not okay.

I really appreciate Pastor Foster’s ministry.

The following is DL Foster’s speech at the Jan. 17, 2012 AFTAH press conference outside the Southern Poverty Law Center, featuring African American and pro-family Christian leaders condemning the SPLC’s “hate group” politics. Foster is a pastor and the founder of Gay Christian Movement Watch, based in Atlanta:

Steve Jobs: ‘I’m glad I didn’t end up as an abortion’ — I’m glad he didn’t end up as one, and I’m glad I didn’t either (I was born 10 yrs. less one day before the Roe v Wade decision).  Too bad he didn’t make his views more visible while he was alive.  Or maybe he just thought it was important that he was alive but not the people who bought his goods?

How Barack Obama and other big government statists really bankroll their reelections — great video.  This image below the video explains most of it: Even if we cut 100% of non-entitlement spending (i.e., zero military, zero infrastructure, zero politicians, etc.) we don’t take in enough money to pay entitlements.  The deficit grows every year and we’ll be like Greece — only on a much larger and more devastating scale — in less time than you’d think.

Thoughts on Steve Jobs

Yeah, I know there are countless posts on him today.  Indulge me.

1. Condolences to his family and friends.  He appeared to be a genuinely sincere family guy (once he finally acknowledged the out-of-wedlock daughter).

2. He was adopted.  His father wanted to keep him but his biological mother’s father was against the relationship.  He was very, very lucky not to have been aborted.  Fortunately for him he was conceived well before Roe v Wade.

The abortion would have been just as tragic if he hadn’t become famous, of course.

Here is the story as Steve Jobs told it in a commencement address at Stanford University in June 2005. His birth mother, he said, “felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?” They said: “Of course.” My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.”

3. I can’t help but think of how many people eulogizing him are part of the anti-capitalism crowd.  How ironic.  He is the poster-boy for capitalism and will be a legend for decades, if not centuries.  His energy, ideas and competitive nature created products that benefit nearly all of us.  The government could never invent the Mac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, etc.

4. He is now where he’ll spend the rest of eternity.  I don’t know where he is, I just know that at least until recently he claimed to be Buddhist.  If he didn’t change his beliefs then this spectacularly powerful, rich and famous man will spend eternity in Hell paying for his sins.  If he did repent and believe, then he’ll be with his creator and Savior in Heaven for eternity.  The same goes for the other ~150,000 people who died yesterday.

One site had typical God-related comments such as “RIP — A help to God in heaven.”  I realize that there is a lot of sloppy religious talk when people die, but it is interesting to see how people seem so confident in their universalism (i.e., everyone except Hitler goes to Heaven).  One commenter (not me) merely asked if Jobs was right with God, without noting a specific religion, and it was quickly deleted.

Ick. Why did Chuck Colson sell out for a meaningless puff piece with Jim Wallis?

False teacher Jim “the Gospel is all about wealth redistributionWallis did a pointless piece with Chuck Colson: Conviction and Civility – Jim Wallis and Chuck Colson – God’s Politics Blog.

It was a ridiculous non sequitor where the Left once again gets to pretend that conservative rhetoric caused the shootings in Arizona — even while saying they didn’t.

The president rightly said that no act of incivility can be blamed for the profoundly evil shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the tragic killing of 6 of her constituents and wounding of 13 others. Nonetheless, we should not lose this moment for moral reflection and renewal. We must re-examine the tone and character of our public debate, because solving the enormous problems we face as a nation will require that we work for a more civil public square.

Hmmm . . . It didn’t have anything to do with the shootings, but let’s use it as a catalyst to talk about it anyway?  Why not use the insanely un-civil rhetoric of Olberman, Maddow, etc. — or the Congressman who equates questioning the health care abomination with being like Hitler.

I expect nonsense like that from Wallis, but not Colson.  He should know better.

Steve Jobs, Big Brother

Apparently Apple Computers “got the memo” that it is “OK” to discriminate against Christians. Leading that charge is their Chairman/CEO Steve Jobs. Despite one of the highest positive ratings available (4+), Apple pulled an app developed by the Manhattan Declaration—a group of 500,000 Christians who have publicly declared their support for traditional marriage, life and religious liberty—from their iTunes store.

. . .

What’s offensive is the action of Steve Jobs. Jobs allows applications in support of gay marriage and abortion. Planned Parenthood has an app, so do several gay marriage groups. There’s an app to sign petitions to repeal Proposition 8 in California. And there is even an app coming to allow gay marriage backers to “report” priests and pastors who preach about the sanctity of marriage!
