Weekly roundup

money.jpgGovernment run lotteries are an awful joke.  Instead of sending a message that success is possible with hard work and thrift, our leaders tell the poor that the way out is to spend what little you have on a gambling program with the biggest sucker odds of all.

A household with income under $13,000 spends, on average, $645 a year on lottery tickets, about 9 percent of all income.  David Brooks

Concise, thorough and clear summary of the false teachings and false Bible translations of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.  Hat tip: Ms. Green

When Gay Rights and Religious Liberties Clash – even NPR can see the impacts.  It ain’t pretty.  Hat tip: Gay Christian Movement Watch

Armed with those legal protections, same-sex couples are beginning to challenge policies of religious organizations that exclude them, claiming that a religious group’s view that homosexual marriage is a sin cannot be used to violate their right to equal treatment. Now parochial schools, “parachurch” organizations such as Catholic Charities and businesses that refuse to serve gay couples are being sued — and so far, the religious groups are losing.

I know the pro-GLBTX groups will cheer, but I hope the wimpy middle-ground Christians wake up before their religious liberties are gone.

Contrary to what all the DaVinci Code School of Theology graduates believe, The Canon was not decided at Nicea

It goes without saying that [Bart] Ehrman is not in the pocket of orthodox Christianity. His non-acceptance of these fables of Nicaean construction of the canon of Scripture are based on the fact that there is no valid historical reason to accept these ideas.

More nukes! – good public policy and a great strategy against Obama.

Ann Coulter made some good points about the Democrats’ non-policy on energy.  They have done nothing and plan to do nothing.  They are getting just what they wanted: Higher gas prices.

Liberals complain that — as B. Hussein Obama put it — there’s “no way that allowing offshore drilling would lower gas prices right now. At best you are looking at five years or more down the road.”

This is as opposed to airplanes that run on woodchips, which should be up and running any moment now.

Moreover, what was going on five years ago? Why didn’t anyone propose drilling back then?

Say, you know what we need? We need a class of people paid to anticipate national crises and plan solutions in advance. It would be such an important job, the taxpayers would pay them salaries so they wouldn’t have to worry about making a living and could just sit around anticipating crises.

If only we had had such a group — let’s call them “elected representatives” — they could have proposed drilling five years ago!

A great choice for McCain to make for VP

Help!  Help!  I’m being repressed!  One of the best scenes from a movie full of classic moments.  You could use this to teach history or political science.  It has subtitles, which help a lot.  Hat tip: Pastor Timothy

Did God really say _____ ?

bible.jpgYes.  Yes, He did.

OK, you have to listen to the rest of the question to know the real answer, of course.  There are areas of legitimate debate.  But the pet theological liberal trick is to undermine the authority of the Bible so it is easier to ignore parts they don’t like.  The theological liberal mantra seems to be to constantly call into question what a plain reading of the Bible says.

It is a classic Dalmatian Theology trick – implying that the Bible is only inspired in spots, and that the liberal theologians are inspired to spots the spots.  Thanks anyway, but I’ll continue to treat the whole book as inspired.

They miss the irony of their theme being straight from Satan in Genesis 3:1, perhaps because they are so quick to dismiss Genesis in general.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

Yes, He really said that Jesus was the only way, that Jesus is God, that marriage is for one man and one woman, that you shouldn’t kill innocent human beings, that we are all sinners in need of a Savior, that there is a Heaven and a Hell, that there is Truth, and so on.

Masquerade!

masquerade.jpgThis is a theme passage for false teachers.  Notice how it uses the word masquerade three times, and how they appear as angels of light.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

These false teachers look the part, but underneath they are inauthentic and highly destructive.  Watch out for them in your churches . . . and your blogs.  Of course, only God truly knows their hearts and we all stumble at times.  But they’ll often tip you off with their disdain for the word of God and their mockery of those who take it seriously.

They’ll quote the Bible liberally (pun intended) and confidently when it suits their purposes, then undermine it whenever they don’t like what it says, saying foolish things such as this in the process:

There is also the likelihood that the writer of Matthew took something that Jesus that he and-or others vaguely recalled hearing, and went to Scripture to give it the spin he desired.

Sure.

Does it matter if we get the Gospel right?  Uh, yeah, sort of . . .

Galatians 1:8-9 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

Whoa! This was on TV?!

ERIt was surprising but so encouraging to see that the clip below was on the TV show ER a couple years back.

The chaplain is the classic fake Christian you’d expect to find in most theologically liberal churches today.  I love how the patient doesn’t buy her “just make up a god in your own image” type of platitudes.

The money quotes from the dying patient:

All I’m hearing is some new age “God is love” one-size-fits-all crap . . . I don’t have time for this now . . . I want a real chaplain who believes in a real God and a real Hell . . . I don’t need to “ask myself,” I need answers, and all your questions and uncertainty are only making things worse . . .

I need someone who will look me in the eye and tell me how to find forgiveness, because I am running out of time!

Hey Christians, time to fire up!  Some people don’t want the truth.  But there are lots of real people like this in the world who need and want the truth.  They must be so sick of the lies and the politically correct “God is whoever you want him to be” nonsense taught by the world and by far too many churches.  Is it really so hard to understand that you do not get to tell the creator of the universe how eternity works?

Are you ready to tell them the truth and the Good News?  Forgiveness, redemption and eternal life are possible, but only through trust in Jesus.
