5 myths about the Jubilee — a good analysis of how the concept of the Jubilee is often misused to justify government redistribution of wealth.  I pasted the text for the first one.  Click the link for the rest.

Myth 1: Jubilee means a forgiveness of debt.

It is clear in the Old Testament text and to many commentators that in Leviticus 25, Jubilee does not involve forgiveness of debt, at least in the way we normally use the term. There is no debt forgiven because it has already been paid. Let me explain. If Israelite family members have a debt they can ask the person farming their land for a lump sum payment priced according to the number of years before the Jubilee. The price would be determined by the projected amount of crops to be yielded prior to the Jubilee. To put it in modern terms, if you had a debt of $250,000, there are five years prior to the Jubilee, and each crop is worth $50,000, then the “buyer” would give you $250,000 for the rights to farm the land, and at the time of Jubilee you would receive your land back because the debt had been paid off.

So the “buyer” does not really own the land but leases it. The debt is paid off by the land (crops). We don’t know exactly how the price was determined for each year of crops, given the uncertainty due to bad weather or other factors that could lead to a poor or lost crop. Perhaps the price took into account that some years would be more profitable than others.

At the time of Jubilee you would of course rejoice that your debt had been paid and your land returned to your full use, but you would not thank the leaser for “forgiving” your debt. The Jubilee declaration might be analogous to a “mortgage burning party.” You would celebrate with friends that this significant debt was paid. The debt is not “forgiven” or “cancelled” because it is paid.

Numerous commentators endorse this understanding. For instance, Derek Tidball says, “Purchasing the land was like purchasing a lease.” [1] And R. K. Harrison says, “Only the produce of the land could thus properly be bought or sold.” [2]

Myth 2: Jubilee involves a redistribution of wealth (land).

Myth 3: Jubilee shows the relative nature of private property.

Myth 4: Jubilee leads to income equality.

Myth 5: Jubilee is a universally applicable principle.

‘Two and a Half Men’ actor calls his show ‘filth’ — I’ve never watched the show but from what I’ve heard it was child abuse to subject this kid to the material he was given.

Nineteen-year-old Angus T. Jones has been on the show, which used to feature bad-boy actor Charlie Sheen and remains heavy with sexual innuendo, since he was 10 but says he doesn’t want to be on it anymore.

“Please stop watching it,” Jones said. “Please stop filling your head with filth.” . . . .

In the video posted by Forerunner Chronicles in Seale, Ala., Jones describes a search for a spiritual home. He says the type of entertainment he’s involved in adversely affects the brain and “there’s no playing around when it comes to eternity.”

“You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that,” he said. “I know I can’t. I’m not OK with what I’m learning, what the Bible says, and being on that television show.”

New study from China links abortion to breast cancer — yet another study shows the connection.  At least some of these cancers are preventable!  Please pass this along the next time someone asks you do buy something pink or to donate to breast cancer research, or especially if they claim that Planned Parenthood helps reduce breast cancer.  Planned Parenthood causes more breast cancer than it detects.

Mystery: Virginia gun violence falls as gun sales soar — Once again we see the impact that more guns = less crime.  But keep repeating it, because the mainstream media sure won’t tell people.

When photo ops meet red tape — Sadly and predictably, Obama’s “touching” photo ops with Hurricane Sandy victims were nothing but empty promises.  Too bad so many voters said it influenced them to vote for Obama.  I’d like to think that these victims will see the wisdom of conservatism now and be a little less naive, but the salt-water effect of Liberalism usually leaves the victims craving more.

I am not making this up: Slate says white turkey is racist— Of course preferring white meat is racist! That’s why Americans prefer hamburgers over pork chops (“the other white meat”) at a ratio of about 1,000 to 1 . . . oh, wait, that goes the other direction . . .

If we preferred dark meat they’d claim we were racist cannibals.

Your tax dollars at work: Middle School Children Taught Homosexual Foreplay — and this is before that state passed a “same-sex marriage” law.

California is to states as Detroit is to cities, and they are now the poverty leaders.  But just try those Liberal policies a few more decades and things will totally turn around.

Obamacare will pay for abortions for people making up to $92,000.  Got that?  So if you are the parent of several kids and you make $46,000 you get to pay for abortions of the childless people making double what you do.

Lesbian complains about Muslim barber to Human Rights Commission — You’ll have to suppress the schadenfreude when reading about this Liberal Sacred Cow vs. Liberal Sacred Cow battle.  It is a perfect example of what happens when the government increases discrimination by granting special rights to certain ethnic or sexual perversion groups.  In this case you should bet on the Muslims because the Left fears their violence and can rationalize it as religious tolerance, even while being wildly and hypocritically intolerant of Christians.

It is similar to the hypothetical dilemma where you ask Liberals whether they’d approve of aborting gays in the womb.  In my experience they usually love abortion more than gays.

Great points by Crowder about Stupid Stick (marijuana)

  • Marijuana is more harmful than alcohol, not less.
  • Legalizing pot increases use. It does not decrease it.
  • There is almost no one in prison for convictions of marijuana use alone.
  • Marijuana makes you much more likely to suffer from psychosis.
  • The biggest reason for the increase in use among young people is the propaganda that it’s harmless.

And now for some great news — the saving grace of God in Saudi Arabia.  Never forget that God is sovereign and that while we should be salt and light in a sinful world, He will ultimately overcome and He still changes lives every day all around the world, even in — and especially in — the most unlikely places.  But note how God used the radically different behavior of the Christians to help convince the man to read the Bible.

Did your media inform you of these stories?

microphone.jpgIf not, you should consider expanding your horizons*.  This week’s list:

1.  NYT silent on shocking Hollywood pedophilia charges.  The evil Fox News had this story, but the NY Times did not.  (I don’t watch Fox, but I do read Hot Air).

Apparently, pedophilia is an entrenched part of Hollywood culture — but you wouldn’t know that if you only consulted The New York Times for news. Check out this Fox News account of just some of the muck that underlies Hollywood’s glamorous gilding:

If a spate of recent allegations proves true, Hollywood may have a hideous epidemic on its hands. The past two weeks have brought three separate reports of alleged child sexual abuse in the entertainment industry.

Martin Weiss, a 47-year-old Hollywood manager who represented child actors, was charged in Los Angeles on Dec. 1 with sexually abusing a former client. His accuser, who was under 12 years old during the time of the alleged abuse, reported to authorities that Weiss told him “what they were doing was common practice in the entertainment industry.” Weiss has pleaded not guilty.

On Nov. 21, Fernando Rivas, 59, an award-winning composer for “Sesame Street,” was arraigned on charges of coercing a child “to engage in sexually explicit conduct” in South Carolina. The Juilliard-trained composer was also charged with production and distribution of child pornography.

Registered sex offender Jason James Murphy, 35, worked as a casting agent in Hollywood for years before his past kidnapping and sexual abuse of a boy was revealed by the Los Angeles Times on Nov. 17. Murphy’s credits include placing young actors in kid-friendly fare like “Bad News Bears,” “The School of Rock,” “Cheaper by the Dozen 2” and the forthcoming “Three Stooges.”

What’s worse: Former child stars like Corey Feldman (“Lost Boys”) and Alison Arngrim (“Little House on the Prairie”) have said these three isolated, independent charges of child abuse are indicative of a much broader problem. Their quotes are chilling:

Corey Feldman [made] eye-opening remarks in August to ABC’s “Primetime Nightline” that “the No. 1 problem in Hollywood was and is and always will be pedophilia. That’s the biggest problem for children in this industry … It’s the big secret.”

Alison Arngrim, the veteran Hollywood actress best known for her role decades ago as Nellie on “Little House on the Prairie,” has said, “This (the abuse of children) has been going on for a very long time.

“If a child actor is being sexually abused by someone on the show, is the family, agents or managers – the people who are getting money out of this – going to say, ‘OK, let’s press charges’? No, because it’s going to bring the whole show to a grinding halt, and stop all the checks,” says Arngrim. “So, the pressure is there not to say anything.”

P.S. Paging Lady Gaga … Wouldn’t this kind of child molestation qualify as bullying in a big way?

Yes, it seems like the anti-bullying stars (who only seem to oppose bullying of gays, whereas conservatives oppose all bullying) should be bold and brave and “out” the molesters.  But that might cost them something.

2. It is fair game to criticize Rick Perry and anyone else who forgets things they should know.  But does your media give equal time to Liberal gaffes

Said Obama while looking around the room: “We are honored to be joined by… one of the Justice of the Supreme Court Ruth.” At this moment the President made a move with his forehead and eyes saying “ah…” and then looked down at his papers and said “Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is here.”

This of course is worse than when Texas Governor Perry who was clearly referring to a specific 8-1 ruling said “eight unelected Justices,” nor is the same as when Perry said “Not Montemayor,” knowing clearly that he does not have the correct name of Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Or how about the NY Congresswoman who hadn’t heard of “Fast and Furious?”  She not only misses out on it in the news but doesn’t even notice it at work!

3. ACORN was exposed by conservative journalists.  The Mainstream (Leftist) Media would have ignored them completely – just like they are ignoring that ACORN is back in the form of the Occupy Movement.

When the radical group ACORN was shut down, Jeff Quinton at Quinton Reports reminds us, the state and local chapters of ACORN reconstituted themselves as new non-profits. And guess what they’ve been up to lately?

In more than two dozen cities across the nation Tuesday, an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movementtook on the housing crisis by re-occupying foreclosed homes, disrupting bank auctions and blocking evictions.
Occupy Our Homes said it’s embarking on a “national day of action” to protest the mistreatment of homeowners by big banks, who they say made billions of dollars off of the housing bubble by offering predatory loans and indulging in practices that took advantage of consumers.

4. The “Fast and Furious” debacle has been barely covered by the Mainstream Media, especially the part about its goal to to undermine legal firearm ownership.

5. While the Obama administration is aggressively exporting its pro-gay ideology to other countries (basically forcing their beliefs on others), they are silent on religious persecution.

We all know about the report of the Obama Administration saying it will check to see what countries are doing on the gay rights front to make sure gays are not being persecuted. But at the same time the Obama Administration has decided to not reauthorize the bipartisan U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.

The Commission investigates religious liberty issues around the world and informs the State Department about nations persecuting people because of religion, including Christians.

In other words, we’re going to start checking up on how countries treat gays and lesbians, but Obama wants to shut down the Commission that investigates how countries treat citizens who believe in God.

6. Do death threats qualify as bullying if they are made against Christians?  Apparently not.  See Charges Filed as Oklahoma City Pastor Paul Blair Gets Death Threats after Opposing Pro-Homosexual Ordinance.  Fortunately the legal system is stepping in here, but don’t expect to hear about this in any Liberal media outlets.

*One of the best time-savers when discussing politics with Liberals is to ask what conservative media they consume. Typical answer: [Crickets chirping]. Then you politely note that you consume plenty of media from both sides and then form your opinions. That isn’t what makes you right (well, it makes you Right but not necessarily correct), but it does mean you have examined the issues from both sides while they probably haven’t. (Yes, they could pose the same question to you, but I don’t know anyone who can only consume conservative media. The Leftist mainstream media is very, very hard to avoid.)

Did your media inform you of these stories?

One of the best time-savers when discussing politics with Liberals is to ask what conservative media they consume.

This week’s examples

1. Have you heard how racist the OWS movement is?

African Americans, who are 12.6 percent of the U.S. population, make up only 1.6 percent of Occupy Wall Street.

Why isn’t the media up in arms over the “obvious” racism in OWS? After all, that was their conclusion with the seemingly low % of blacks in the Tea Party movement (please ignore the great popularity of Herman Cain — it hurts their racist meme!).

And the OWS movement has already tried to do some “affirmative action” and they still have a rate that low.

I’m not saying the OWS is racist, just that the theological liberals are racist for playing the race card against Tea Partiers while ignoring the elephant in the room for the OWS.

2. Climategate 2.0: New E-Mails Rock The Global Warming Debate – this is as big as Climategate 1.0.  This is the same trustworthy establishment that brings you Darwinian evolution.

Three themes are emerging from the newly released emails: (1) prominent scientists central to the global warming debate are taking measures to conceal rather than disseminate underlying data and discussions; (2) these scientists view global warming as a political “cause” rather than a balanced scientific inquiry and (3) many of these scientists frankly admit to each other that much of the science is weak and dependent on deliberate manipulation of facts and data.

3. The European Media Describes the Occupy Movement as “Anti-Capitalist,” Why Doesn’t the US Media?  Free markets have reduced more poverty than any government program ever has.

4. Leftist ABA rates record number of Obama judicial appointees “not qualified” – Appointing judges is one of the most important things a President does, yet most campaigning and media coverage address things that mean little.  We saw this coming: Obama said he would appoint “empathetic” judges and McCain said he appoint them based on the ability to understand the law.  An 8th grade student could see which view was accurate and Presidential.

President Obama’s quest to transform federal courts by appointing unqualified leftist ideologues is worse than previously imagined, according to a mainstream newspaper that reports the notoriously liberal American Bar Association (ABA) has rejected a “significant number” of potential judicial nominees, most of them minorities and women.

This is hardly earth-shattering news considering Obama’s judicial appointments so far. However, the ABA rebuff sheds light into the magnitude of the president’s crusade to stockpile the federal court system, where judges get lifetime appointments, with like-minded activists. In fact, Obama has made it an official policy to “diversify” the federal bench when it comes to gender, race and even life experiences.

Hillbuzz on Herman Cain

In Another reason to like Herman Cain I noted how I appreciated his simply stated, biblically accurate views on homosexual behavior when CBS tried one of their tiresome “gotcha” questions:

In an interview on CBS News:

“I believe homosexuality is a sin because I’m a Bible-believing Christian, I believe it’s a sin. But I know that some people make that choice. That’s their choice.”

Of course, the mainstream media and the far Left will hate him for that.  But note that Cain (and every Christian I know) aren’t trying to get in the middle of the lives of gays.  We take a live-and-let-live approach, only getting involved when the lobby tries to redefine marriage or teach 5 yr. olds how “normal” transgenderism is and how you don’t really know if you are a boy or a girl.

But that’s why Hillbuzz is my favorite blog run by gay guys (OK, it is the only one I follow, but still . . .).  They are well aware of how dangerous the Left is and, despite being gay, they don’t follow the party line.  See  Media Manipulation (And Eeyore Breeding) Alert: Herman Cain on Homosexuality | Hillbuzz.  I encourage you to read the whole link, but especially the bolded parts below.  While the media and false teachers* will tell you what haters Christians are, there are many reasonable people who have learned who the truly vicious haters are.

I don’t believe Herman Cain is bigoted against gay people (certainly not in the same way that the LSM is bigoted against Christians.) As Kevin DuJan has said many times, as a Gay man, he has faced far more abuse and discrimination from Leftists (who want him to die a painful death) than he ever has from Christians (who, at worst, have threatened to pray for him). [Emphasis added]

Now, why would Lamestream Dinosaur Democrat Media Outlet CBS News want to put a soggy black raincloud of doom over the head of Herman Cain? Why would CBS want Republican and libertarian voters to dismiss this self-made man, who won the first GOP primary in South Carolina, has a track record of turning around failing businesses (and who, P.S., is black)? Why would the LSM want to use social issues to drive a wedge between libertarians and religious conservatives?

If you’ve been following along at home, the answer is “Because the LSM and Democrats (redundancy alert) believe Herman Cain can beat Obama.”

Herman Cain’s religious beliefs are shared by millions of Americans on the “religious Right.” (They aren’t shared by me, as it happens, but more on that in a moment.) I believe this news story was designed to drive a wedge between this segment of the Anti-Obama Coalition and libertarian-leaning GOP voters like myself.

And before Kevin DuJan taught us all about Eeyorism, I would have fallen for it.

If Herman Cain’s religious beliefs bother you, I’d like you to take a deep breath, and give the issue more thought than the LSM wants you to. I expect my take on this will be extremely controversial. But I’m going to go out on a limb and treat Hillbuzz readers like thoughtful, intelligent adults, unlike the LSM. (I realize this is a risky thing to attempt on the Internet. But I think the Buzzverse can handle it.)

. . .

Tell me again what Herman Cain’s personal religious beliefs have to do with unemployment, the plummeting value of the dollar, the unending corruption in Washington, the flight of capital out of the country, $4 gas, the ban on offshore drilling, or selective enforcement of Federal election law by Eric Holder’s Justice Department.

The answer is, as a libertarian, Herman Cain’s personal religious beliefs are immaterial, and of no concern to me, because the First Amendment and Federal law prevent him from inflicting them on me. [Emphasis in original]

Our Founding Fathers were geniuses. They created a public system that would allow for a diversity of private opinions. The Constitution and Bill of Rights protect non-religious people like me from the tyranny of a religious majority. The First Amendment prevents any candidate from inflicting his or her personal beliefs on me.

Remember, the LSM is totally and completely in the tank for Obama. You must evaluate all anti-GOP political coverage in that context.

Recognize this CBS news story for what it is…yet another transparent attempt by the LSM to divide the Anti-Obama Coalition and pick our candidate for us!  [Emphasis in original]

How many more times are conservatives and libertarians going to fall for this?

I’m so glad they see through what the MSM is doing here.

I don’t hate gays.  I’ve known a bunch and still do.  We get along great.  I have their long-term best interests at heart.  I seek to share the Gospel with them, if they are interested.  That’s love, not hate.

*False teachers include people like Jim “the Gospel is all about wealth redistribution” Wallis and race-baiting Chuck “Jesus is not the only way” Currie.

Echo chambers?

I sometimes hear critics refer to conservative blogs as echo chambers, as if we just say the same things to each other to reinforce our views.  That is a wildly ironic claim.

The worldview I was brought up in was indeed that of Christian parents and a Christian church, but neither trafficked in apologetics and neither were conservative. I thoroughly rejected it all.  The denomination I grew up in (Disciples of Christ) is such that I wouldn’t send my dogs to it now.  It is a mockery of authentic Christianity — pro-abortion, pro-square circles (oops, I mean “same-sex marriage”), anti-Jesus is the only way to salvation, anti-authority of scripture, etc. — your basic apostate denomination.

The media I was raised around was wildly liberal — your basic Big 3 of ABC, NBC and CBS plus liberal newspapers.  I didn’t know any better, and bought the lie that journalists were some sort of noble, unbiased group that could be trusted.

My entertainment and reading were purely secular, where God was either mocked or ignored.  I consumed massive amounts of TV that was designed to push a liberal agenda.

My parents are wonderful and intelligent people, but they grew up in the Great Depression (one of them was literally in Grapes of Wrath Oklahoma).  Therefore, they tend to think we need government to save us and have been life-long Democrats.

My education was completely secular, including rabidly pro-Darwinian science teachers. Ironically, as pagan as I was, even in 9th grade I realized something was amiss when the biology teacher was so visibly hostile to religion.  He was obviously pushing an ideology and not just science.  From elementary school through college, once again God was either mocked or ignored.

I was nominally pro-choice when I was younger, intuitively realizing that killing unborn human beings was wrong but that there might be larger downside to making abortion illegal (for example, I initially bought the “back alley butchers” lie).

In my late 20′s I came across massive amounts of evidence and logic for the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, the accuracy of the Bible, etc.  God opened my eyes to his truth and I became a Christian.

I came across the facts about abortion and realized that every pro-choice canard could be annihilated.  I take on any pro-choice arguments I come across when teaching pro-life reasoning.  I learned about Intelligent Design and realized the great hoax that Darwinian evolution is.

Facts and logic brought me to where I am, not my broader environment.  My beliefs are the opposite of what my environment would have led me to.  These views make me less popular by the day with a world that holds the Christian worldview in contempt.  That’s part of the deal, as Jesus so accurately warned us.

So is my Christian / conservative blog an echo chamber?  Heh.  I’ll be glad to mock that sentiment until my fingertips are raw.  Yes, I have a well-defined commenting policy, but to say it is an echo chamber is a concession speech.  I am a conservative Christian in spite of every brainwashing attempt the world has thrown at me, and I am glad to defend that worldview.

I came out of the echo chamber, not into it.  Woo-hoo!

1 John 2:15-16 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

Additional thoughts from an old post:

I had interesting discussion I had with a liberal over the holidays.  I just let him ramble with his pro-liberal, pro-Obama, anti-business rant for a while.

Instead of pointing out the flaws in his facts and logic, which history demonstrates he would have ignored, I just asked a simple question: How much conservative media do you view or listen to?

His answer?   ”None.”  It spoke volumes, and he knew it.

I calmly pointed out that I consume plenty of liberal media: My Yahoo feed is from Reuters and I update it many times each day, I read the very liberal Houston Chronicle, etc.

Does that make me right?  No, but it proved beyond all doubt that only one of us takes the time to listen to both sides.

That response saved me a lot of time and frustration.  I hope it planted a seed with him as well.  If he has any intellectual honesty he’ll realize that if he only consumes liberal media then his views are likely to mirror their output.  Brainwashing and indoctrination, anyone?  Any critical thinking going on?

What a coincidence!  The SEIU (Service Employees International Union, a major supporter and influencer of the President) is involved in all sorts of voter fraud activities.

Are you ready to be a leader? Some excellent questions. Samples below.  Go read ‘em all.

2. Do you retain control of yourself when things go wrong? The leader who loses self-control in testing circumstances forfeits respect and loses influence. He must be calm in crisis and resilient in adversity and disappointment.

3. Do you think independently? While using to the full the thought of others, the leader cannot afford to let others do his thinking or make his decisions for him.

4. Can you handle criticism objectively and remain unmoved under it? Do you turn it to good account? The humble man can derive benefit from petty and even malicious criticism.

5. Do you possess the ability to secure discipline without having to resort to a show of authority? True leadership is an internal quality of the spirit and requires no external show of force.

Obama Gets Heckled, Then Lies About Republican Support for Global AIDS Funding – I have a video on my iPhone of a World Vision employee going on and on about how much he likes President Bush.

In fact, President Bush was credited for huge contributions to fighting AIDS in Africa going back to 2003. The Washington Post noted that he had tripled funding by 2006. The AP lauded Bush’s efforts in this regard. The Telegraph called him “an African hero.” The BBC suggested Bush may have been the continent’s best friend. Scientific studies showed the Bush initiated program had reduced the mortality rate by 10%, amounting to hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide.

18 to 1

I am sickened by the over the top bias against Sarah Palin.  I mean, we expect the media to be biased – even very biased – but for the “big 3” to be showing 18 negative stories to 1 positive story on her is just unfathomable.

Why have so many Americans turned against Palin, who made such a strong impression on the public when John McCain introduced her as his running mate at the Republican convention in September?  Most likely, it’s because the few good reports they’ve heard about the Alaska governor have been overwhelmed by a blizzard of bad reports. ABC, NBC and CBS news shows are covering Palin intensively, and they are running 18 negative stories for every positive one.

Network coverage of Palin has moved beyond criticism to outright ridicule.  Strikingly, all three networks have repeatedly aired clips of Palin being parodied by a comedy show, NBC’s Saturday Night Live, leading to concerns that many Americans are confusing the real Palin with SNL’s figure of fun.  When have comic impressions of a political figure ever qualified as hard news?

When is the last time you heard a story about the “glass ceiling” that was endlessly reported when Hillary was running?  I guess that isn’t a big deal if the allegedly anti-women conservatives select one.  Oh, wait a minute, that should be an even bigger news item!

They distort and replay alleged Palin gaffes repeatedly, but give Biden a pass and ignore Obama’s stammering whenever he doesn’t have a teleprompter.

Friendly reminder: Whatever you say about Palins’ alleged lack of experience goes double for Obama.  At least double.

Anyone who complains about Palin’s lack of experience but not Obama’s has a serious problem with rational thought and/or intellectual integrity.
