Paul is anticipating an argument, so he answers it in advance. But the argument he expects obviously isn’t, “God gave people unlimited free will, so why do some still not choose him?” No, he is anticipating objections to his argument that God has predestined some to salvation. The tension of God’s sovereignty and man’s accountability is present, but that doesn’t override the concept of predestination. And as always, under the Arminian or Molinist views, God either couldn’t or wouldn’t persuade people to use their “free will” to repent and believe. That isn’t what makes them incorrect, in my view, but it is something the holders of those views should own.
Romans 9:18–21 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills. You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?

Great points on a misused verse. The notion that everyone who gets a seminary degree is automatically given a special vision from God is absurd, yet that’s how these false teachers misuse this verse.

The Jews hardened in Romans 9 (so that the Gospel could go to the Gentiles) get another chance in Romans 11. “Did they stumble beyond recovery? Not at all!” Rom 11:11 and “ If they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again” Rom 11:23
The hardening is temporary and for a specific purpose.

So glad you posted the video about vision and the people perishing. What gets me is that utter arrogance that these men have in thinking they can shape their churches and denominations. They actually believe their view of the church and denomination is better than Christ’s view. I faced this in the now dying PCA. Entire presbyteries bent on only allowing certain type of men into their ranks. Only those who meet their vision for what THEY want the pastors to be. Bet you can guess: those who go along with the spirit of the age, and don’t quibble over what the Bible actually teaches.
