I think there is an unfortunate chapter break between Luke 20 and 21. I used to think that the widow’s mite passage was an encouragement to give more, but a sermon by John MacArthur disabused me of that. The context is how the scribes are bad, including devouring widows’ houses. Then it shows how a widow gives all she had to live on. We should give generously, of course (2 Cor. 9), but the notion that we would daily give all we have to live on is absurd. It would be irresponsible to do that. And the next passage is about how the temple will be coming down soon anyway.

Luke 20:46–47 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

Luke 21:1–4 Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
